INTRODUCTION
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta hydroxyl acids (BHA) are naturally occurring acids which improve the appearance of the skin. They exert specific and unique effects on skin structures such as stratum corneum, epidermis, papillary dermis and pilosebaceous follicles. They help to remove dead skin cells from the surface layer of the skin.
AHAs have been shown to have profound effect on skin keratinization and corneocyte cohesion.
Loss of suppleness, appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and brown spots are all manifestations of aging rough and dry skin.
Alpha hydroxyl acids accelerate the renewal of the epidermis by providing the skin with a gentle exfoliation that eliminates dead cells which dull the complexion. This smoothing action improves rough skin and restores skin freshness and softness.
Conditions of pathogenic, unusually dry skin characterized by extreme flaking and scaling may be attributed to a variety of genetic, intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Such problematic skin conditions have been particularly difficult to control by use of conventional moisturizers. AHAs have been described as effective for the treatment of a number of such conditions in which abnormal keratinization consistently contributes to pathogenesis in the form of ichthyosis, warts, psoriasis, eczema and acne.
Beneficial effects of AHAs against hyperpigmented, photodamaged and wrinkled skin have been widely known.
Alpha hydroxyl acids exfoliate the skin by “dissolving” the bonds between skin cells, helping your skin to shed its dead cells and revealing the fresh new cells underneath. They do not require any rubbing or abrasion to do this, as compared to facial scrubs which physically “rub” dead cells away.
Allantoin and chamomile extract help alleviate the untoward skin irritation effects caused by irritants. As a cell proliferant and epithelization stimulant both hastens the growth of new healthy skin.
