Description
Properties
Melanocytes are skin cells which produce the pigment melanin responsible for the skin’s color.
Brown spots are due to an increase in the number of melanocytes and the overproduction of melanin.
Exposure to sunlight stimulates the process of pigmentation and causes tanning. In certain cases the pigmentation process is disturbed and zones of brown spots appear.
Sun exposure, oral contraceptives, pregnancy, endocrine dysfunction and genetic predisposition have all been implicated in the etiology of melasma. Among these, exposure to ultraviolet radiation is thought to be the most important factor. It is well known that the enzyme tyrosinase plays key role in melanogenesis as it regulates the rate-limiting step of melanogenesis. Thus, tyrosinase inhibition is one of the major strategies when developing new hypopigmenting agents.
4-butyl resorcinol has an inhibitory effect on both tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein-1. It reduces melanin biosynthesis resulting in the reduction of blemishes and local areas of hyper-pigmentation in the skin. It also blocks Melanosome transfer from Melanocytes to keratinocytes
Licorice extract reduces the activity of the enzyme tyrosinase within the skin.
Wheat germ oil effectively tones and conditions the skin whilst improving the appearance of blemishes and dark skin colors.
Allantoin eases and soothes the skin while enhancing cell-regeneration. This enhances the new skin color and refines the skin texture with greater clarity.
